国連の公用語は英語、フランス語、スペイン語、中国語、ロシア語、アラビア語
代表団がこれらの公用語で話す場合、同時通訳がつき、他の公用語に訳されます。

仕事で使われる「使用言語」は組織によって異なる
国連の使用言語（Working Language）は一般的には英語とフランス語と言われていますが、組織や委員会によって異なります。例えば、国連総会や安全保障理事会では上記の公用語が全て使用言語です。僕が働いている経済社会委員会（http://www.un.org/en/ecosoc/about/pdf/rules.pdf）では英語、フランス語、スペイン語が使用言語です。実際にオフィス内ではどうかと言いますと、ここバンコクでは英語が殆どで、たまにフランス語が聞こえてきます。会議でない限り、タイ人同士はタイ語で話しています。
国連本部で日本語で演説する姿を見たことがある？
昨年あった国連総会では安倍首相が日本語で演説しているところをご覧になった方もいらっしゃると思います。国連のHPによると、公用語ではない言語で声明を出すことができますが、その場合公用語の通訳若しくは公用語で書かれた声明を用意する必要があるとあります。
公用語を複数話せると国連に就職する上で有利
国連で働く上で、英語もしくはフランス語が「読み・書き・話す・理解」という四つの観点から流暢に話せることが必須ですが（一つでも流暢に印をつけなかった場合、システムで自動的に書類選考の時点で弾かれる仕組みがあります）、公用語を二ヶ国語以上話せるとさらにポイントがつく仕組みになっています。
歴代国連事務総長は皆英語とフランス語を話す
因みに歴代国連事務総長は皆英語とフランス語が話せますし、必須の能力とみられているようです。潘基文事務総長就任時、フランス語でインタービューをされ、タジタジに答えたそうですが、それがメディアに叩かれました。その後、潘基文事務総長はフランス語教師を雇って勉強をしたそうです。国連総会など、事務総長として話すときに意識的にフランス語をスピーチに混ぜて話しています。英語だけに偏らないようにしているのですね。
国連組織の中にも例外があり、公用語が異なる場合がある
公用語が国連総会、安全保障理事会と異なる国連機関があります。
例外その１：UNESCO（ユネスコ、国連教育科学文化機関）は公用語が９つ
UNESCOは９つの公用語があります。英語、フランス語、アラビア語、中国語、ロシア語、スペイン語の国連総会の公用語に加えて、ヒンズー語、イタリア語、ポルトガル語の三つがUNESCOの公用語に含まれます。
通常の使用言語は英語、フランス語、アラビア語、中国語、ロシア語、スペイン語の６つです。

例外その２：UPU（万国郵便連合）は公用語がフランス語のみ
UPUは同じく国連システムの中の一つの機関ですが、公用語はフランス語のみの珍しい機関です。ただし、使用言語として英語が加わります。

例外その３：IFAD（国際農業開発基金）は公用語が四つ。英語、フランス語、アラビア語とスペイン語
IFADも同様に国連システムの中の専門機関ですが、こちらは公用語が４つと定められています。英語、フランス語、アラビア語とスペイン語です。

1946年2月1日：国連総会にて公用語と使用言語が定められる
1946年2月1日の国連総会にて、中国語、フランス語、英語、ロシア語、スペイン語が公用語として、英語とフランス語が使用言語として定められる。
はじめはアラビア語は公用語ではなかった

Taking into account General Assembly resolution 2479 (XXIII) of 21 December 1968, which pointed out that the use of several languages by the United Nations could constitute an enrichment and a means of attaining the objectives of the Charter of the United Nations and that the General Assembly considers it desirable to includes of the Security Council,
Decides to include Russian and Spanish among the working languages of the Security Council and, in this connexion, to amend rules, 41, 42, 43 and 44 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Security Council, in accordance with the annex to the present resolution.

3189 (XXVIII). Inclusion of Chinese among the working languages of the General Assembly and the Security Council
The General Assembly,
Recognizing that Chinese is one of the five official languages of the United Nations,
Noting that four of the General Assembly and the Security Council, and affirming that, in the interest of efficiency in the work of the United Nations, Chinese should be accorded the same status as the other four Official languages,
1. Decides to include Chinese among the working languages of the General Assembly and teamed accordingly the relevant provisions of the rules of procedure of the Assembly;
2. Consider it desirable to include Chinese among the working languages of the Security Council;
3. Requests the Secretary-General to transmit the present resolution the President of the Security Council.

The General Assembly,
Recognizing the significant role of the Arabic language in preserving and disseminating the civilization of man and his culture,
Recognizing further that Arabic is the language of nineteen Members of the United Nations and is a working language in such specialized agencies as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, The World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization, as well as an official and working language of the Organization of African Unity,
Aware of the need to achieve greater international co-operation and to promote harmonization of the actions of nations as envisaged in the Charter of the United Nations,
Noting with appreciation the assurances of the Arab States Members of the United Nations that they will meet collectively the costs of implementing the present resolution during the first three years,
Decides to include Arabic among the official and the working languages of the General Assembly and its Main Committees and to amend accordingly the relevant provisions of the rules of procedure of the Assembly.

Resolution 528 (1982) of 21 December 1982
The Security Council,
Having considered the question concerning the inclusion of Arabic among the official and working languages of the Security Council,
Bearing in mind General Assembly resolution 35/219 of 17 December 1980,
Bearing in mind also General Assembly resolutions 3190 (XXVIII) of 18 December 1973 and 34/226 of 20 December 1979,
Taking into account that the General Assembly, in its resolution 35/219 A, after affirming that, in the interest of the full effectiveness of the work of the United Nations, Arabic should be accorded the same status as the other official and working languages, requested, inter alia, the Security Council to include Arabic among its official and working languages not later than 1 January 1983,
Decides to include Arabic among the official and working languages of the Security Council and to amend rules 41 and 42 of the provisional rules of procedure of the Council to read as follows
“Rule 41
“Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish shall be both the official and the working languages of the Security Council.
“Rule 42
“Speeches made in any of the six languages of the Security Council shall be interpreted into the other five languages.”

過去に提案された新しい国連の公用語
ベンガル語
ベンガル語は世界で最も広く使われている言語のうちの一つです。Ethnologueはの統計結果を見ると、6番目に多くの話者がいる言語です。2009年にバングラデシュ首相は、国連総会の前で、ベンガル語を国連の公用語の一つにすべきだと主張しました。

ヒンディー語
ヒンディー語はインドとフィジーの公用語のひとつです。2007年には、政府が「国連でのヒンディー語の公用語の地位を求めるために直ちに外交運動を行う」と報道されました。 2009年の外務省のプレスリリースによると、インド政府はヒンディー語を国連の公用語として認識させるために「積極的に働いている」と述べています。 2015年、ネパールのパルマナンダ・ジャー副大統領は、ヒンディー語を国連の公用語として含めるという支持を表明しました。

将来こうなるといいなと思うこと
現在公用語は６つですが、これがどんどん増えるといいなと思います。そして将来的に公用語や使用言語という概念がなくなる時代が来ることを期待しています。それは個人的にテクノロジーで翻訳であれば将来的に可能であると考えています。当然、国連で話されることに対して誤訳があってはなりません。現在の自動翻訳の質を考えるとまだまだでしょう。
機械学習と自然言語を通して良質な翻訳データの蓄積を
国連では一流の通訳が常に活躍しています。会議の通訳を全て機械学習させることで、政治分野における翻訳技術が格段に高まるのではないでしょうか。それを来るべき将来に向けてデータを蓄積させます。機械学習は教師データと呼ばれるデータの正確性を判定させるためのデータが必要です。その良質な教師データは国連では取り放題です。データを蓄積し、将来どの国の人でも母国語で仕事ができる将来を期待します。
